BREAKFAST // Crime in the Cairns CBD: An update on what is being done

Tuesday, 5 Jul 2022
7:15 am - 9:00 am
Novotel Cairns Oasis, Abercrombie Room

Early interventions, closer working ties with specialist services and stronger collaboration with other government agencies will form part of a new approach to community safety in the city.

The Cairns Community Safety Plan – CBD Pilot was endorsed by the Cairns Regional Council on 1 June 2022 with the aim of managing, responding and reducing antisocial behaviour in public spaces.

The Cairns CBD has been chosen as the pilot site due to the endurance of criminal activity, public intoxication and people sleeping rough in this location. It is not unknown the adverse social and economic impacts these issues have on the city and the CBD users, residents, businesses and tourists.

In this panel discussion, the Queensland Police and Cairns Regional Council will provide an update on what is currently being done and the focus areas moving forward.

The Panel:
- Brett Spencer, Executive Manager of Community Life, Cairns Regional Council
- Superintendent Chris Hodgman, Assistant District Officer (City, Country, Cape and Torres), Queensland Police
- Inspector Monique Ralph, Cairns Metro Inspector, Queensland Police
- Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Laverty, Acting Officer in Charge, Cairns City Beat, Queensland Police
- Michael Healy MP, Member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism Industry Development

Moderated By:
- Patricia O'Neill, Chief Executive Officer, Cairns Chamber of Commerce
