After extensive research and consultation, the President of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce has released an action plan as a proactive approach to improve the issues of itinerants and anti-social behaviour in Cairns, and achieve real change for those in need. The Cairns Chamber of Commerce is committed to improving the overall safety of the Cairns CBD, whilst improving the image of our beautiful city.
“The action plan is the product of months of consultation with business owners, police, Governments and welfare organisations. The lobbying for a 24 Hour Alcohol Detox Centre in Cairns will be a significant focal point for the taskforce, assisting in the regulation of antisocial itinerant behaviour currently displayed in the CBD.
A further key item on the action plan is the implementation of a minimum floor price per standard drink in all alcohol retail outlets across the Cairns region. We strongly believe that by making this change, it will limit the excessive alcohol intake occurring in the Cairns CBD and surrounds, which is resulting in the antisocial behaviour we are seeing today.
The safety and wellbeing of the itinerants and those in need is of the utmost importance and a fundamental factor behind the formation of the itinerant action plan” said Nick Loukas, President of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce.
We ask for the support of the Cairns business community, and the Cairns region as a whole to advocate with us and achieve our action plan.
