Project description
Amrun (pronounced Um-run) is Rio Tinto’s A$2.6 billion expansion of one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits south of the current Weipa operation. The new mine has a planned output of 22.8 million tonnes a year and will replace production from the depleting East Weipa mine. Annual bauxite exports from Cape York will increase by around 10 million tonnes.
Amrun involves the construction of a bauxite mine and associated processing and port facilities. This will require an average workforce of around 600 people for the three year construction period. Amrun will continue Weipa’s history of providing employment opportunities and strengthening the Far North Queensland economy.
