How do we plan and grow our city and communities and also secure social and economic outcomes without adversely impacting our unique biodiversity?

James Cook University leading researchers have taken over our October luncheon to give as an answer to this question. The JCU team will present on how important urban and regional planning, developing sustainable economies and changing social attitudes are for our future of our beloved region.

The JCU team will be joined by World champion netballer Laura Geitz one of the most recognised and regarded female role models in Australian Sport.

Prof Sandra Harding – Vice Chancellor and President, James Cook University

About Sandra’s presentation : Professor Sandra Harding will give as un update regarding Cairns Campus developments including AITHM & Accommodation, discussion about JCU Cairns Campus future plans. Touching on new State of the Tropics report that was recently released.

 

 

Dr Silvia Tavares - Lecturer Urban Design, College of Science & Engineering

About Silvia’s presentation: Dr Silvia Tavares presentation will focus on strengthening local economy through amended microclimates. Urban climates are invisible and frequently an urban design afterthought. However, improved street thermal environments can influence city dynamics and have positive impacts on businesses.

 

Prof Allan Dale - Professor of Tropical Regional Development, Cairns Institute

About Allan’s presentation: Allan Dale will be presenting on Northern Landscapes: Investment in northern Australia is beset by complex conflicts within the northern Australian landscape. Trilateral and durable regional.

 

 

 

Ms Deb Wellington, Adjunct Senior Lecturer, JCU & Program Leader Strategic Planning, Cairns Regional Council

About Deb’s presentation:  Ms Deb Wellington will be exploring the collaborative approach between Cairns Regional Council and James Cook University on urban design initiatives and how they are shaping the future of the City.
