Major Federal Election Priorities Announced
09 August 2013
Cairns’ leaders today jointly announced their five key priorities for the upcoming Federal Election, with major infrastructure and economic diversification projects high on the agenda.
Developed collaboratively by all key stakeholders in Cairns, these priorities have been identified as the region’s most significant economic enablers, developed to overcome current economic challenges and capitalise on new and emerging opportunities.
Priorities include increasing the Australian Defence Force presence in Cairns, diversifying the economy by developing sporting infrastructure to position the region as a tropical high-performance sports training and development hub, expanding marine infrastructure at the port of Cairns, and initiatives which support trade development and investment opportunities with our nearest neighbour, Papua New Guinea.
Strategic regional policies like positioning the region for the digital economy and reducing the costs of insurance also feature. In particular, the digital economy has been identified as a critical enabler to diversifying the Tropical North Queensland economy by enabling greater business innovation and improving regional productivity.
Aligned with the Tropical North Queensland Regional Economic Plan and Regional Development Australia’s Roadmap for Far North Queensland and Torres Straits, these priorities support our vision of being the world’s leading sustainable tropical region.
Today’s announcement gives a clear indication to election candidates of the needs of our community and importantly those which will deliver sustainable economic prosperity for our region into the future.
Cairns leaders look forward to engaging with the federal election candidates over the coming weeks and seeking their commitment of support for our 5 key priorities.
Cairns leaders also welcome the recent announcements by the Federal Government and the Coalition of increased funding commitments for the Bruce Highway and expect a continued focus on this critical piece of road infrastructure.
